【Introduction】

The 156 photographs contained in this book are mainly from amateur photographers and the old photo collections of ordinary citizens of Shanghai. They mirror the changes in the daily lives of the people of Shanghai over 30 years of reform and opening up. Shanghai, this renowned city of the Far East, has continuously played a pioneering role in the course of China"s modernization. Tradition and modern civilazation exist side by side in Shanghai. Eastern and western ways of thinking come together. The spirit of this cosmopolitan city often reveals itself in the lives of its citizens, and evolves with changing times.

This book is a kind of narrative by the ordinary citizens of Shanghai, detailing the reform and opening up of the city. The stories of the masses may seem trivial individually, but taken together they constitute a vibrant living history. In a sense, it is also a memoir of a former way of life in the city, a revealing historical portrait of a place rich in vitality.

The stories here testify to the development of Shanghai, and the great progress of the city adds to the signficance of the stories.
